In his career, he has released three studio albums: Diorama in 2008, Mirror in 2009, and Kaleidoscope in 2011. Piano is an instrumental theme in his music. His style mixes instrumental hip hop, hip hop, nu jazz, chillhop and japanese jazz. I've also linked some of my favourite songs by the artists I've mentioned.Instrumental hip hop, hip hop, nu jazz, japanese jazz, chillhopĭJ Okawari is an independent Japanese DJ, record producer and composer born and based in Shizuoka, Japan.
You kind of have to do the same in order to find what you're looking for. In Marcus D's recent AMA he even stated that his initial process to making music, is crate digging, just finding songs. I think that the best way to find artists is just going through the related videos on Youtube and just digging. But he does that nice light-hearted jazzy rap you're looking for which is nice. This doesn't mean I genuinely don't like some of his songs, it just means that some of his songs are great, where as others are just meh (in my own opinion). His songs, for me at least, are kind of hit and miss.
He is one half of the free-jazz/hip-hop (nujazz?) duo Bop Alloy which is I think the closest to the sound you're looking for. In the same vein Marcus D is similar in it that he has a style that resembles Nujabes however with his own flair. Nomak is a great artist who I find has a very similar style, despite some variation, to what you may be looking for. However, the style is a bit hit and miss with what you're looking for so you may have to dig deep into it. I have yet to hear a song by them that I don't like. I mean, if you're looking for a light-hearted rap (straying away from the more 'oldschool' sound) I recommend artists like Soul Chef, who have worked with other artists that I find have a similar sound to what you're looking for.Īnother group that I highly recommend is Cradle Orchestra. Well, with a lot of artists I like, I find that they all have their own unique sound. In my humble opinion, Uyama Hiroto is probably the closest thing to Nujabes that I have heard.
These are the ones that will probably be easier to find around the web at least. OK, well, I'm sure I could pull out a few more if I tried, but this should get you started. Hopefully that will help you pick and choose. I'll list a few of my favorites that I believe are similar and a link to a youtube video of my favorite song by them.
